Preparing Your Cab For Overnight Trunking In The Winter

Preparing your truck for the winter months is an essential part of keeping safe whilst on the road. This time of year can bring all kinds of weather conditions from snow and sleet to black ice and thick fog, all of which can make a trucker’s life a nightmare!

When overnight trunking, temperatures can drop below zero and road conditions can get rather dangerous. Driving through the night can be highly beneficial for all involved but in the colder months, but we want to make sure our drivers are as safe as can be too.

At Barnes, our employees have been discussing some of their cab essentials for overnight trunking in the winter months. Compiling them all, we think we’ve come up with a fool-proof list of essentials, tips and tricks to share with you. Take a look below.

Check your tread depth

Worn tires increase your stopping distance and decrease stability on wet and icy roads. You can try to slide by through winter on low tread, but that’s exactly what you’ll be doing — sliding! Set yourself a reminder check your tread depth before every journey, that way you can keep on top of your tires and always know when a replacement is needed.

Food and hot drinks

An obvious but often overlooked thing. Many truckers include pit stops in their daily journeys but as the colder weather draws in, you can never be too prepared for circumstances that may occur. Perhaps roads are closed, or your favourite stop has frozen pipes! Prepping a hot flask of tea or coffee before you set off, along with a lunch option and a few snacks will come in a clincher if you get stuck on the roads and are unable to access rest stops due to adverse weather.

Rechargeable heating packs

Whilst those ‘crack to activate’ hand warmers are effective there’s something much better on the market – rechargeable heating packs. These nifty things work just like a portable charger but instead of charging your phone they plug into a sleeveless vest worn on your chest and heats up your entire torso, almost like you’re wrapped in a heated blanket on the go.

Torch

As the clocks go back and the nights get longer, touches are a must for those of you parking up in loading bays and laybys. If a situation occurs where you need to get out of your cab in the dark, having a light on hand will help you see clearly, and can also let other people/cars know you are there. Head torches are our top choice as they allow both hands to be free and constantly illuminate your line of sight.

Warm and spare clothing

Dressing appropriately is essential. Chilly, damp, and windy are words synonymous with British winter… and for good reason! You may get cold and wet if you are hauling cargo, removing snow from your windshield, or stopping for fuel. Wet clothes, as well as being uncomfortable to sit in, will make you ill if worn for too long in the cold so always make sure to have a dry change of clothes on hand. Don’t forget your waterproof gloves!

Mobile phone & portable charger

Truckers know that the winter is not only the busiest time but also the most dangerous to be making deliveries. If it’s the case where you can no longer travel or you become stranded, having your mobile phone to contact someone for help is key to your safety. Keeping that phone charged throughout your journey is also very important, because what use is a phone with no battery? Whilst we definitely say no phones whilst driving, we do know the value of keeping in touch with loved ones whilst out driving, especially in the winter!

Why improving HGV security must be a priority for the industry

Every day, talented drivers traverse the nation’s roads making timely, and reliable deliveries to customers and in doing so, play a crucial role in maintaining an efficient supply chain.

However, when it comes to HGV security provision at rest points, there are a number of problems that must be addressed urgently so that drivers can enjoy better conditions while they’re out on the road.

In our latest blog we’ll explore why there is such an urgent need to improve security for drivers at rest points and how it can be done, as well as looking at how at Barnes, we keep our drivers’ safe.

 

Why drivers are so important to the economy

 Road haulage and logistics is an integral part of the UK’s economy, with drivers playing a critical role every day in keeping the supply chain moving. In fact, the industry is estimated to be worth around £124 billion to the economy.

What’s more, 89% of all goods transported by land are moved directly by an HGV on the road and even the remaining 11% needs road haulage at some stage to complete journeys to and from ports, airports, or rail terminals.

This highlights the importance of road haulage drivers and, as such, they deserve to be given the support they need to be able to thrive and be able to enjoy security and safety while they carry out deliveries.

While steps have been taken to improve security at rest points, such as the government’s £100 million investment in roadside facility enhancements, there are still a number of shortcomings that must be addressed so that we can improve working conditions for drivers.

 

Vehicle security issues at rest points

 Unfortunately, security at a number of rest points is inadequate, which leaves drivers all too often vulnerable to vehicle security breaches. Road freight thefts are costing the UK economy £250 million every year and security inadequacies is a primary cause.

One of the most significant issues drivers face when it comes to security is that there simply aren’t enough secure parking sites at rest points, with space often at a premium.

When drivers manage to get a space at a rest point there are frequently little to no security patrols or effective CCTV, which leaves them neglected and unsafe.

An insecure resting site can lead to anxiety among drivers, which will ultimately affect their sleep and recuperation and in turn, their capacity to drive safely and carry out their role to the best of their ability, the following day.

 

How HGV security can be improved

 A clear starting point when it comes to improving HGV security measures is to introduce more secure rest points to allow drivers the chance to gain a peaceful sleep that leaves them refreshed and ready to make safe and timely deliveries.

We also need to see more effective CCTV at roadside facilities, with vigilant monitoring from rest point staff. This should be complemented by having perimeter fencing to deter potential thieves from accessing the rest point and parked vehicles.

An increase in the presence of security guards patrolling the site is also vital to ensure that there’s a further layer of deterrence to trespassers, as well as better all-round facilities so that drivers can enjoy a better recovery after a long day behind the wheel.

 

How we keep our drivers safe

At Barnes, the safety of our drivers is of paramount importance, and we’re committed to equipping them with the tools and knowledge they need to keep safe while they’re out on the road.

We train our drivers so that they understand their responsibilities and, equally, what they need to be looking out for when making decisions on where to park. Drivers are asked to be alert to threats and report any concerns they may have regarding suspicious activity to the police or our traffic office as soon as it is safe to do so.

It’s also imperative that their phones are fully charged and in an area of good signal so as to ensure that they’re able to raise the alarm if an emergency situation should arise.

In addition, when leaving the cab, our drivers are told to always lock the doors and keep their vehicle keys on them, while also making sure they park with the loading doors close to another vehicle or wall.

We may be biased, but we think truck driving is a pretty great job! Our country relies heavily on the efforts of our drivers. Without them tirelessly travelling the country, the world would come to a standstill, which we saw a glimpse of during the height of lockdown and it wasn’t pretty.

Our drivers are valued members of our team, so we wanted to hear some of the reasons they love working in trucking and specifically trucking for us at Barnes. Here’s what they had to say:

The Open Road

“The freedom you get from being on the road really is one of the best things about the job. I enjoy taking control of my own career. Also, by driving up and down the country you get to see the beautiful sights the UK has to offer. We often forget just how wonderful the countryside really is.”

The Culture

“I would say the main thing would be the culture. Barnes really focuses on supporting the drivers. There is sadly often an attitude towards drivers which can be quite dismissive and negative. Drivers can often report feeling undervalued, or like they are treated as “just a number”, but if you get in the right place, trucking can be a wonderful community. It can provide you with a place to meet different people and build lasting relationships. Drivers can meet a lot of new people along the way including dispatchers, managers, fellow drivers, customers, and mechanics. It’s a great career for meeting new people and building great relationships.”

The Benefits

“One of the great benefits about being a member of the Barnes team would be that they pay for CPC training which can sometimes be quite expensive. They also pay a referral bonus when drivers refer their friends as well as providing free uniform.”

Driving In The Day Vs. Driving At Night – Which Wins?

Many Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) drivers are faced with the decision of whether to trunk their routes by daylight, or after the sun sets. There are pros and cons to both, but at Barnes, we work with our drivers to meet our clients demands with both options.

While different people will have different preferences, some drivers have specific reasons for operating certain hours. Some firms will require their team to work during the day and others by night; yet many will allow their drivers to choose which time of day works best for them.

So, which is best for you as a driver? If you’re just staring out in the HGV industry, let’s weigh up both options and find out for you…

HGV Driving In The Day Vs. At Night

Driving in the daylight

Pros:

  • Parking at a rest stop will not be hard to come by during daylight hours if you need a rest during your travels
  • Daylight follows your body’s natural circadian rhythm, making it easier for you to stay awake during the daytime as the light stimulates you and keeps you more alert and awake
  • The scenery can be enjoyable, and you get to appreciate the country that you’re travelling from your higher vantage point
  • Obstacles and things that lie on the roadway will be easier to see during the daylight hours than at night time when they can be hidden by the darkness.

Cons:

  • Many of us don’t like the traffic jams that inevitably come with the daylight hours, especially during rush hour or when passing through populated areas
  • Workforces are often most active during the day, meaning the time it takes to travel the distance through construction zones longer than it might at night
  • Distracted driving is much more prevalent as you can take in the landscape around you and all the sights there are to see. However, drivers must be careful to pay attention to the road and not just the surroundings around them, no matter how pretty they happen to be.

 

Driving at night

Pros:

  • Less traffic on the roads can help you log better mileage in less time
  • Delays are less likely to be an issue during overnight trunking
  • Many people find night driving more relaxing (but be careful that it’s not too relaxing or you may lose your level of alertness needed to drive safely)

Cons:

  • Driving at night may disrupt your sleep pattern
  • It may be easier to get lost on the roads as the dark will conceal signs and other landmarks that may give you a clue as to where you’re at

 

There’s no clear answer. In the end it is really a matter of preference, but we do hope the above has helped you come to your own decision!
